Duties of this LEAP Job Posting:

The Anishinaabe Student Mental Health Counselor plays a pivotal role in supporting the emotional, social, and academic development of Anishinaabe students. The candidate will be responsible for providing culturally sensitive services, developing and implementing support programs, and acting as a liaison between students, families, the school, and the wider Anishinaabe community.

They will be responsible for providing the counselling co-ordination and delivery of the component of the Bimose Tribal Council ASA Program initiative. They reports directly to a designated supervisor at the school and the EPP Coordinator.

  • Delivery of all areas of counselling to Anishinaabe students in guidance, career, social and crisis
  • Coordinating and delivering all programs under the Bimose Tribal Council
  • Maintaining effective communication and liaison with parents, school staff, First Nation school staff, counselors and community support organizations
  • Works with the school’s administrators in following the school policies when it is necessary to refer students to service providers outside the school
  • Provide individual and group counseling to students, with a focus on the unique needs of Anishinaabe students
  • Develop and implement culturally relevant programs and initiatives that support the well-being and academic success of Anishinaabe students
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to create a supportive and culturally responsive school environment
  • Advocate for the needs and rights of Anishinaabe students within the school system
  • Facilitate connections between Anishinaabe students and their culture, including organizing cultural events and activities
  • Engage with the Anishinaabe community to build strong partnerships and ensure community needs and perspectives are incorporated into school practices
  • Organizing orientations sessions, educational, self-esteem building and Anishinaabe cultural activities
  • Monitoring student progress and attendance on a regular basis
Qualifications for this LEAP Job Posting:
  • Diploma or Degree in Social Work and/or Certificate in a Native Counselor Training Program or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 3-5 years work experience in related field
  • Knowledge of Anishinaabe language, culture, and traditions an asset
  • Excellent time management, planning and organizational skills are required
  • A clean criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills
  • Knowledge of computer applications
