Duties of this LEAP Job Posting:

Equine Program Operations & Supervision

  • Supervise and support Equine Program staff, ensuring effective training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain structured staff schedules that balance departmental needs while minimizing overtime.
  • Facilitate and oversee Equine programming, including horsemanship, Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL), farm time, trail rides, and Spirit Horse sessions.
  • Oversee the design and development of new infrastructure, ensuring alignment with program needs, cultural considerations, and sustainable education initiatives.
  • Assist in coordinating and supporting construction projects, ensuring they meet program requirements, safety standards, and cultural considerations.
  • Ensure proper maintenance, safety, and inventory tracking of Equine-specific equipment.
  • Establish and implement systems, procedures, and reporting mechanisms to support best practices.

Animal Care & Facility Management

  • Assist with the training of horses and assessing their suitability for program activities.
  • Supervise and assist in the daily care of horses, chickens, ducks, cats, and bunnies, ensuring proper feeding, grooming, cleaning, and medical care.
  • Administer equine first aid, medications, and assist with veterinary treatments as required.
  • Utilize behavioral techniques such as positive reinforcement and groundwork exercises to ensure safe & effective training.
  • Manage the procurement of supplies, including feed, tack, and medical items, ensuring adherence to program standards and safety regulations.
  • Collaborate with the Equine team and Land & Property Manager to ensure proper upkeep of facilities, equipment, and grounds.

Administrative & Financial Management

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for booking Equine Program services, prioritizing First Nation community members and maintaining all registration records (logs, waivers, and contracts).
  • Coordinate with the Education & Summer Camp Coordinator to schedule summer camp bookings.
  • Track program usage and community engagement, supporting data analysis and reporting for funding.
  • Develop & maintain tracking systems for equipment inventory, program productivity, and community feedback.
  • Ensure that all data entry and reporting for the Equine Program are being maintained.
  • Work with the Camp Director to develop and monitor detailed budget plans for Equine-related expenses.

Community Engagement & Partnerships

  • Foster culturally reflective care, ensuring First Nations, Métis, and Indigenous participants are treated with respect, compassion, and understanding.
  • Engage with eight First Nation communities to identify needs for celebrations, events, and programming at the Youth & Family Wellness Camp.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with NBDS and other KCA programs to coordinate Equine Therapy sessions.
  • Collaborate with First Nation and Kenora-based community services (health organizations, schools, youth centers, child and family services) to deliver participant-centered programming and strengthen relationships.
  • Maintain positive working relationships within KCA, partner organizations and community groups.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide training and mentorship for staff and volunteers.
  • Act as Trail Guide Lead.
  • Support & coordinate special events, celebrations, and full camp bookings with the Programs & Events Manager.
  • Work flexible hours as required to support the success of all programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications for this LEAP Job Posting:

Education & Certification:

  • Diploma in Equine Studies (asset)
  • Certified Riding Instructor
  • Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) certification or willingness to obtain
  • Equine First Aid certification or willingness to obtain
  • Valid CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain
  • Good standing with the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association

Equine Knowledge & Experience:

  • Strong understanding of the Equine Code of Ethics
  • Excellent horsemanship skills and knowledge of equine behavioral management techniques
  • Experience in horse care, training, and farm management
  • Solid working knowledge of basic medical treatments for animals
  • Understanding of equine nutritional needs

Skills & Competencies:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Forms, Word, OneDrive, Teams, etc.)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain strong relationships
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills

Additional Requirements:

  • Experience working in or with First Nations communities is considered an asset
  • Physically and mentally capable of working long hours in a labor-intensive environment and inclement weather
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Current satisfactory criminal reference check with a vulnerable sector search
  • Understanding of the Anishinaabe (Ojibway) language is an asset
