Reporting to the Territorial Planning Unit Director, the TPU Forestry and Mining Intern will provide a broad range of technical support and evaluation services to Treaty #3 Communities on issues relating to Forestry and Mining processes in the Treaty #3 Territory. The opportunity will foster growth and learning for a recent graduate in the above-mentioned fields through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund. Please view eligibility requirements below.

Duties of this LEAP Job Posting:
  • Provides technical support and advision to the Territorial Planning Unit.
  • Review legislative documents (federal, provincial, municipal) in relation to mining and forestry
  • Provide technical expertise to Treaty #3 communities as requested and mandated through resolution
  • Participate in Natural Resources related meetings as needed
  • Build and maintain relationships with Treaty #3 communities through attending community engagement sessions as they relate to held portfolios
  • Conducts structured analysis of the environmental, natural resources, or related issues and prepares comprehensive technical reports or briefing notes.
  • Help with the organization of meetings and engagement sessions in relation to mining and forestry such as developing meeting materials and information packages
  • Research and develop funding applications as they relate to the TPU
  • Provide technical expertise and support in the development of related reports and engagement documentation as necessary
  • Reviews and evaluates application, supporting documents, and other materials (e.g. ESAs, project descriptions, closure plans, etc.) submitted to provincial and federal regulatory authorities.
  • Conducts detailed analysis of more specialized aspects of an application or proposals which requires significant in-depth study prior to a statutory decision (e.g., First Nations consultation and accommodation).
  • Conducts data gathering, investigation, and technical evaluation using advanced software and database tools, as appropriate.
  • Assists in the day-to-day administration of the Territorial Planning Unit
Qualifications for this LEAP Job Posting:
  • University and college graduates who have graduated within the last three years from an accredited college or university. Candidates must be graduates of post-secondary degree or diploma programs.
  • The position must provide the intern with first time employment in their field of study.
  • Candidates are only eligible to participate in the internship program one time.
  • Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Preference will be given to those applicants with:

  • Experience and Education working in the fields of Forestry and Mining will be considered an asset.
  • Experience and Education working with Indigenous Peoples and Anishinaabe Culture will be considered an asset.
  • Experience using computer applications, especially geographical information systems, statistical software, and /or information management system.
  • Experience communicating and building relationships with partners in the resources development sector (e.g. mining, forestry, energy)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, respectful working relationships with GCT3 staff, Treaty #3 First Nations, federal or provincial ministerial staff, and the general public.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license
