Reporting to the Solid Waste Manager, the Solid Waste Supervisor will provide leadership and guidance to unionized staff and is responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of Solid Waste operations including but not limited to, the Transfer Station, curbside pickup, and landfill operations. This position is responsible for the prioritization of work assignments, site inspections, asset management, performance management, and financial management tasks.
- Oversees the operation of the Transfer Facility and the landfill
- Manage, organize, and resolve unexpected factors and conditions such as workforce issues, equipment breakdown, etc.
- Plans and coordinates operational work and available resources to meet operational service levels, service requests and public safety
- Assists in the preparation, implementation, and monitoring of capital and operating project budgets
- Supervise work crews performing work assignments and provide training, mentoring, monitoring and feedback
- Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules and expedites workflow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations
- Conducts daily tail gate meetings and all health and safety meetings, assigns work crews and equipment to jobs
- Monitors quality, quantity, and completion of work according to plan and schedule
- Will act for the Solid Waste Manager in their absence
- Handling of customer service requests that are escalated to management and determining course of action and resolution
- Approves time, work orders, invoices and incident reports as required
- Orders materials or equipment and records and reports material use on the appropriate forms as required
- Develops various department documents including but not limited to Standard Operating Procedures and safety policies for the department
- Works in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and City policy; identifies potential hazards and unsafe conditions and assumes responsibility as a Supervisor within current legislation; contributes to and recommends actions in the promotion of health and safety in the workplace
- Other duties as assigned
- Post-secondary education in Environmental Management, Sustainable Waste Management or related field
- Minimum of three (3) years related experience in environmental management, solid waste, and/or landfill operations
- Supervisory experience would be an asset
- Must possess valid ‘G’ class driver’s license and have access to a reliable vehicle
- Demonstrated knowledge of waste management, recycling and resource conservation practices, methods and trends as applicable to a municipal setting
- Knowledge in landfill operations including sequence of landfilling, daily cover requirements, degree of compaction of the waste, composting operation as well as hazardous waste
- Strong leadership and team building skills, with the ability to prioritize, mentor and manage a team
- Computer literacy skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, database software, internet, etc.
- Knowledge of the Environmental Protection Act, the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, and any other applicable legislation
- Ability to deal with sensitive or confidential matters with tact, discretion, and diplomacy
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, stakeholders and the general public
- Well-developed organizational and time management skills with an ability to complete a high volume of work with accuracy and within prescribed deadlines in a fast pace environment with flexibility to changing priorities
