Students, aged 14-17, will be working under the guidance of a Smoke-Free Ontario Act Enforcement Officer. The SFOA Test Shoppers will assist with monitoring retailers in the Northwestern Health Unit area for compliance with youth access restrictions under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act.

Duties of this LEAP Job Posting:
  • Work with the Tobacco Enforcement Officer (TEO) to test shop tobacco and vape vendors (i.e.: attempt to buy tobacco or vape products as an underage youth)
  • Training is provided
  • Youth would not test shop in their home community but would travel to other communities in the region to test shop. Some days may be longer but most of the time would be spent travelling with the TEO.
  • Test shoppers are paid for all hours worked, including travel time, an average of 5-8 test shops per year.
Qualifications for this LEAP Job Posting:
  • Youth aged 14-17 years old in 2024
  • Currently enrolled in secondary school (students interested in a law enforcement or legal careers would be an asset)
  • Outgoing personality. Be willing and able to approach and ask retailers for tobacco and vape products in a public setting and provide a description of the retailer.
  • Be willing and able to allow photos (of themselves) to be used as evidence and when needed, attend court.
  • Strong observation skills, and ability to recall details and capture these observations legibly as notes.
  • Available on some weekends
  • We are looking for youth that don’t currently smoke or vape
