Reporting to the Director of Child & Family Advocacy, the First Nation Representative (FNR) plays a key role in representing both the interests of Animakee Wa Zhing #37 First Nation and the children and families that use the services of the Child & Family Advocacy (CFA) department. The FNR is responsible to represent and advocate for First Nation members that are involved with child welfare agencies throughout Canada. The FNR also has a key role in delivering the programs and services for the CFA department. We are recruiting two (2) FNR positions to support the community.

- Works closely with the Director of Child & Family Advocacy (Director) and Chief & Council during the creation and transition of services for the community.
- Works with the Director to ensure alignment between Animakee Wa Zhing #37 First Nation strategic priorities and the work of the First Nations Representative Program.
- Serves as the main contact between the First Nation and child & family services (CFS) providers.
- Exercises the rights and responsibilities of the First Nation under “An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit, Metis, Children, Youth and Families.”
- Builds and maintains trusting relationships with all levels of government, community member rights- holders, stakeholders, and the community and families.
- Represents Animakee Wa Zhing #37 during judicial proceedings, while making presentations and decisions that affect the lives of the First Nation’s children and families.
- Maintains an empathetic and supportive demeanour to the First Nation’s children and families.
- Is the main contact for the First Nation’s children and families helping them understand the provincial, territorial, and federal laws, and how the CFA department works at Animakee Wa Zhing #37.
- Developing and monitoring protocols forservice agreements with CFS providers.
- Participates in the development, delivery, and monitoring of culturally inclusive CFA programs including: family planning; preventative services; child development programs; parenting programs, safety planning/protection services; reunification services; and post-majority plans.
- Supporting customary care, kinship care, and alternative care arrangements.
- Providing or arranging for traditional alternative dispute resolution (eg: circle processes and Indigenous approaches) for the First Nation’s children and families receiving service.
- Monitoring agreements and care plans with service providers and addressing issues of non-compliance. Works with the Director where necessary to make changes.
- Using a variety of teaching techniques including supportive counselling, modelling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcement, to support healthy children and healthy families.
- Encourages clients to practice self-help skills, and offers culturally inclusive skill development services for children, parents, families, and caregivers.
- Attends and actively takes part in staff, family, and community meetings as needed.
- Post-secondary degree, certificate, or diploma in Indigenous studies, community or social services, child & family services, legal, education or another regulated related field.
- Experience working in social services, legal services, family services, community services, education or with a First Nations organization.
- Combinations of lesser experience/education will be considered.
- Experience developing and delivering programs in a child welfare environment.
- Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation including; Ontario; Child, Youth, and Family Services Act, and “An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit, Metis, Children, Youth and Families.”
- Ability to collaborate with leaders during times of transition to get the CFA department operational.
- Strong knowledge of First Nation cultural values and traditions.
- Knowledge of court processes and systems, including filing of court documents.
- Ability to use an electronic and paper file system and keep confidential files secure.
- Ability to stay current on industry regulations and government updates.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to shift priorities regularly.
- Advanced people skills with the ability to interact respectfully in the workplace and community.
- Advanced communications skills, both oral and written, to communicate effectively and respectfully in the workplace and community.
- Ability to remain calm during emotional or emergency situations involving families and children.
- Strong ethics with the ability maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Strong computer and typing skills including use of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Ability to work flexible hours, be on-call, or do overtime when needed (includes weekends).
- Current First Aid and CPR Level C an asset.
- Ability to complete other related duties as assigned.

- Valid Class G Driver’s licence and willingness use First Nation vehicle to travel for work.
